Verbena officinalis (Verbenaceae): Pharmacology, Toxicology and role in female health

Verbena officinalis Linn (Verbenaceae), the common verbena or vervain, a traditional herb with immense cultural and medicinal significance in European, Greek, American, Roman Egyptian countries. Phytochemical analysis suggests presence of iridoid glycosides, secoiridoid phenylethanoid flavones, pentacyclic triterpenoids, monoterpenes, sterols their derivatives. Owing to these phytochemicals, wide range pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antidiarrheal, antitumour, antidepressant, anxiolytic, gastroprotective hepatoprotective, etc are reported. Literature survey highlights distinct role treating dysmenorrhoea, vaginitis, endometriosis, premenopausal night sweating, herbal tonic for pregnant women lactating mothers its use emmenagogue. The review aims promote studies on therapeutic female reproductive health other ailments. scientific databases used compilation data were Google scholar, Pubmed made available specifically from 2010 2022.
